Some warn that canola oil is unnatural or even toxic. Should canola be banned from the cupboard?

I don't care what the professionals say. I personally get violently ill when I eat anything with canola oil in it. At the rate companies are switching to canola oil I will only be able to eat fruit since they are putting it into everything now.

I MISS RYE BREAD!!

Marissa, all kinds of oils are okay to heat, but at what temperature is the question. Extra Virgin Olive Oil, for example, is very healthy only at lower temperatures. It can be carcinogenic at higher ones. Other oils, such as Vegetable, Peanut and Canola, are fine at higher temperatures. Another reason is pollution. Various oils differ in their smoke points: unrefined olive, sunflower, flaxssed, and saffire oils have reletively low smoke points. They should only be used under (I think) 225 degrees. Under 350 degrees is... actually, let me just find a website. Click ---> http://www.care2.com/greenliving/smoke-point-for-cooking-oils.html.

Thankyou for trying to help us understand Canola. Alice has some good points. I have nothing to prove this to be true or factual though. I think that heating any oil is unhealthy. I prefer not using oil if I can avoid it. I like organically grown nuts, seeds, avocados, olives....
and sockeye salmon. I am confused about using oil, therefore I am using less and less all the time. I don't fry!!!!!!!

I appreciate these podcasts and do recall diva stating in one podcast that she tries to get it right as much as possible. I don't know who is right on this issue (Alice & clvngoddess or diva) but I think that it is a good practice to present an opposing view in a constructive way and leave out the personal insults...

Alice, I certainly respect your right to choose what you feel are the most reliable sources of information. Sorry to have lost your confidence.

I'm well aware of Enig/Fallon's body of work. While I think they mean well, my concern is that they have an extreme bias. Although they cite scientific literature in support of their arguments, they are quite selective about which studies they cite (and which they ignore) and manipulative in their presentation of the material. To me, their manifestos are those of people who have already made up their minds, and then set about finding the facts that support their point of view and ignoring all the rest. While they often say things I agree with, I can't follow them everywhere they go. We'll have to agree to disagree.

P.S. to clvngodess: We might have different definitions of "research." I talked about what makes for good research in last week's episode.

I appreciate this article. I didn't know that Canola oil could be GMO produced. If anything this issue gives me reason to do a little more research, and one more thing to look for when reading my labels! Thanks.

Yep, I'm with Alice. I know a little something about canola and GMOs. And I read the science, not the pop crap that Monsanto and other corporations buy and place into the media. Canola isn't a good oil. It's also a very bad oil for people suffering with thyroid issues like Hashimoto's.

Seriously, do some research... outside of the "nutritionist" box.

Now I don't trust anything you say. Canola oil is not bad for you b/c of GMO or the WWI rumors. IT IS BAD for you b/c of the highly toxic process of extracting the oil from the rapeseed(unless done organically) AND b/c heating it over a certain( relatively low) temp. makes it rancid, toxic & turns it into a trans fat--so do onot cook w/ it. http://www.westonaprice.org/knowyourfats/conola.html
Honestly, how did you get this job?
