Lauren Walls: Sorry, but you're not a vegetarian! Please stop misusing that word as it makes it difficult for people who don't eat ANY meat to find what they need at restaurants and for others to understand, with people claiming they are vegetarians (or "mostly" vegetarians) but still eating chicken, fish, and other meats. Can't you just say "I don't eat red meat or pork."? I usually end up saying "I don't eat any meat" since "vegetarian" doesn't cut it anymore.

on water: I drink celery seed tea every day to help lower my blood pressure, because it is a diuretic. Is this consistent with getting enough water if I drink 3-4 plain glasses water plus get 6 glasses of other liquids [ milk, juice, tea, etc?

Hey Monica! I'm somewhat of a vegetarian in the respect that I don't eat red meat or pork. I want to put protein in my diet but I really and truly get sick of only chicken, turkey, fish, and beans.

John,
As it happens, I'm going to be doing an episode on high fructose corn syrup in a couple of weeks so watch for that.

If there is ever a time that Gatorade IS appropriate (if not always necessary), it's during exercise. The sugars it contains help to restock the supply of glycogen in his muscles and I don't think there's any danger of getting too much electrolytes. But there's no need for athletes or anyone else to continue drinking Gatorade throughout the rest of the day.

I live in a hot climate and am quite active. I've never had any heat-related emergency and find my habit of drinking water, tea, and soft drinks has generally worked. But I do have a related question.

My cross country coach in high school was our school's physiology teacher. He insisted we drink only water and avoid sports drinks like Gatorade saying water and half a banana was more effective. Fast forward 25 years and my son is a student athlete in middle school and his coach really pushes Gatorade. He downs about 1/3 to 1/2 of a gallon of the stuff daily and won't touch water. I'm sure he's well hydrated, but I'm worried about all of the sugar/HFCS. Can he be over-electrolyted? What's the story on sports drinks?

I agree that water consumption has been a constant debate amongst many. My personal doctor told me that unless I am outside in the sun or participating in a fitness activity, I do not need more than 20 ounces of water. His recommendation does not work for me. Personally I usually have water next to my bed side, in the car and at work. I am always thirsty! I have a clean bill of health. My two cents anyway. Very good article with an incredible amount of insight!
