I think you've confused grammes of carbs and grammes of sugar. A 500ml bottle of coke contains around 48g of carbs, while a tablespoon of sugar is closer to 15g of carbs. So as 10% of your calories is ~200 cal, then you can have 3 or 4 tablespoons of sugar per day.

(I like to let everyone know that there is around 12 teaspoons of sugar in 1/2 litre of soft drink).

I usually find the products made with real cane sugar more satisfying, more crisply-sweet than those with HFCS. So I tend to drink less real-sugar sodas because I feel sated. My two cents... Great episode, Monica! I <3 chemistry.

Emily,

Thanks for your note! I'm glad it helped clear things up. But you still might want to watch your little guy's juice consumption. Regardless of what it is sweetened with, too much juice can lead to weight problems (and dental decay) in young kids.

Kids like juice because its SWEET. And despite what the manufacturer's want you to think, it is not terribly nutritious.

If he's really going through it, you might want to consider diluting it with equal parts water...or see if you can get him to drink water (easier said than done, I realize!).

Hi Monica. This is Emily, Make it Green Girl's Sister. This is without a doubt one of the best, most level-headed and logical pieces written on HFCS. There is so much hysteria and mis-information out there about this, and as a mom of a 2-year old son who drinks juice like it's going out of style, I greatly appreciate the simple and sooo helpful explanation here. Keep up the good work. I am now a nutrition diva podcast-fan too!
