I've heard so many bad things about milk and everything good I've heard about it can come from other food sources. Some studies have linked ingredients to cancer. Who wants to risk it. You have that life is too short guy--well I bet his tune would change if he learned he had cancer and was told he should have eaten better. I personally hate milk so it's no big deal to not drink it but people have been brainwashed to think it's good for you so they keep drinking it. It's like the ONE single ingredient in tobacco smoke that may be good for you but the thousands of other harmfull ones. All you need to know is that ONLY fruits and veggies are good for you. That's it. Throwing anything else in there is unnecessary. I eat like crap but I am aware of this and someday (probably to late) will change. Milk is unnecessary and possibly bad so might as well skip it. (Icecream on the other hand is soooo tastey!!!)

I just think it's funny that something that is advertised to be so good for your bones is actually so bad for them. FRESH milk (like straight from the cow/goat) contains the highest natural amount of MSM. MSM is a sulfur compound that is important in the waste management of your body AKA it's THE perfect detoxification substance. Drinking it with plenty of water is said to relieve YEARS of toxins that have been put in our bodies from processed foods all the way to every mass produced vaccine we get. However, too much MSM can result in a waste overload on your kidneys and liver. So drinking NATURAL milk in MODERATION is extremely beneficial to your health. PROCESSED milk causes more problems than it's worth. MSM (which would be the main reason for drinking milk in the first place besides the natural calcium it provides) disappears or is terribly reduced in dairy products due to OVERPROCESSING OF THE MILK.
The government, of course, combats this vital fact by putting "beautiful" things in it such as vitamin D, which isn't naturally in milk in the first place. This is so dairy farmers can keep being dairy farmers. Do you know what would happen to the economy if dairy farmers went out of business? They are trying to find THE cheapest way of selling their product which includes overproccessing it, watering it down, and adding special vitamins to it. This is a mask of their greed and the government lets them do it! The government lets them do it because they also realize that if this milk is causing terrible ailments like osteoporosis in our country then the pharmaceutical companies and the health insurance companies are in BIG business.
Now, I LOVE milk. I LOVE yogurt and ice cream and milk chocolate. Milk is simple. You go to the store, you buy a gallon for cheap, you go home, and you drink it.
Easy.
But the funny thing is...the easy things in life are usually if not always the bad things.

Milk does contain certain amounts of Calcium, which is great in preventing Osteoporosis. However, there are other things in milk than can cause cause harm to our human bodies. Me, I love dairy products. I eat them in moderation and lower fat versions as long as the company has not replaced the fat with sugar and sodium. Eat high quality dairy in moderation and as long as you can tolerate the lactose, you should be fine. Other countries that do not consume as much milk, have a tendency to eat other foods that are high in calcium. And a lot less junk food. Look at the French with their buttery croissants. They were not fat until outlets such as McDonalds were introduced. MODERATION people.Put down the peanut butter chunk ice cream and get some exercise. That also helps avoid osteoporosis!

Your column has some useful information but also has some factual errors. Dairy does not reduce the risk of osteoporosis. It causes it. This is because of the extremely high levels of sulfur containing amino acids (much higher than the human body needs). When your body burns it off, it create sulfuric acid in your blood, which leaches calcium from your bones! The US, Canada, Norway, Sweden and Denmark have the highest dairy consumptions rates in the world and also the highest rates of osteoporosis. In Asia, traditionally, almost no dairy was consumed and osteoporosis was almost unheard of, that is until recently, when our influence caused their diet to change. Publish facts, not pseudo science from the milk industry. How much did they pay you?

Yes the milk industry is huge!! Who do you think pays for the Got Milk commercials. The dairy farmers thats who! I love milk and will continue to drink it since it really does have what the body needs. I typically take after a workout. Has protein, carbs, and calcium.

You all amaze me!

Life is too short - to worry about what kind of food, especially those foods that have been consumed for 100's of years. If or when it's gonna kill me sooner than the broccoli or any other food for that matter.

I enjoy a cold glass of milk, I enjoy my veggies, meat - all in moderation. I don't worry about what part of it will kill me - since we will all die one day.

To do so - would be a borning life like you all have shown when it comes to milk.

Many years ago when I asked my paediatrician whether milk was really essential for my children's growing bones, he pointed out that elephants have big bones and they don't drink milk. Yes, the milk marketing people did a great job. My kids ended up with a lot less milk than most kids, and one is now 6 feet 6 inches tall from a 5 feet 4 inch mother.

Vegitarians get PLENTY of calsium from dark green vegitables... where do you think cows get THEIR protein? Grass.

Calsium also can come from vegitables like broccoli. Plus a lot of the important ensymes you need to break down the proteins and lactose in cows milk are taken out when milk is processed.

Milk is not at all a necessity. the only reason for drinking milk is pleasure. Like with your oreos, or in baking. I for one can't give up cheese but I have starting eating less.

For nutritional purposes it is NOT necessary.
