Sugar substitutes seem like a good idea for weight loss, but can they backfire?

The sugar substitutes don't sit well with me, so I've been reading the labels for years. But I've made my daughter aware by asking her to find me gum that has sugar in it..... she has yet to find one. What an eye opener, when a person has to hunt to find something with sugar.

Why not try a natural zero-calorie sweetener instead, and not worry so much about the effects? My gorcery store carries "Truvía" which are little packets similar to Splenda but 100% natural and made from the Stevia plant. Any natural food store will carry a Stevia sweetener and the price is actually quite affordable. I have been using it for about a month or so and it is fantastic.

Great episode, Nutrition Diva! You're brilliant, of course. I also found when I was working at a coffee shop that users of artificial sweeteners tended to crave even more sugars because their taste buds are so deadened to the sweetness. Most artificial sweeteners are 3-40 times more sweet by weight than sugar, so when these folks did splurge, the sweetest sugary White Chocolate Mocha wasn't sweet enough for them.
