Ask the Diva: Does Heat Destroy Vitamin D?

Q. I recently bought a liquid vitamin D supplement and I really don't like the taste of it. I was wondering if I can add it to meals prior to cooking to mask the taste of the supplement or if it breaks down the vitamin.

A. While there’s a lot of information on how cooking affects other nutrients, there hasn’t been much research on how vitamin D is affected by heat.  To be on the safe side, you might try adding it to cold foods instead of hot ones. You might not notice the taste if you add it to a smoothie, for example.
